HW for Feb 26 - What is an American and what are the cultural divisions within North America?

 1. Find topic sentences and/or keywords in the highlights of Crèvecoeur's letter III (anthology, pp. 63-67) and explain your choice in the context of those paragraphs.

2. From the nine "nations" (or cultural regions) of North America, defined by Joel Garreau (anthology, pp. 68-75), which arises your interest the most and why?

  1. "He is an American, who, leaving behind him all his ancient prejudices and manners, receives new ones from the new mode of life he has embraced…"

    With this, it seems that the American is portrayed as a more modern and "evolved" version of his former self. He embraces a new life with new cultural values, leaving behind his old prejudices and customs. In other parts of the text, Crèvecoeur also acknowledges the regional differences within the country (North/South), which challenges the ideological idea of a fully "united" state and contrasts with the complex reality.
